Remembrances

I was blessed to have had a wonderful visit with Mother Francis Paul at Marycrest in L.A. in 2020 when she was a mere 99. It was great. She kinda tilted her head to the side, like she used to do, and says in this incredulous tone of voice, Irish brogue intact: "And to think that you would come all this way, just to see me!" Genuinely humble. Saintly sister...

I do remember small instances of Mother. I lived very close to school , 1/2 block away. I spent some weekend days in the convent helping clean and organize. As Dickie wrote I had so much respect for Mother and how she handled everyone. I must admit now that I was so attracted to Mother Superior that I vowed to marry a women like her. To say the least I had a crush on Mother. I cannot say or for what but Mother had to correct me many times. Mother also advised me in so many ways.I think we were a special group of kids to be at St Bridget at that time and place. I always talk about our time at Saint Bridget of Sweden.

100 years! So I guess I didn’t stress her that much.

In 3rd grade it was raining and I was done with my work. In boredom I removed the lid off my Whitmores candy sampler from Xmas containing my eraser, and twirled it on my finger singing, “rain rain go away," gazing out the window. The lay teacher we had grabbed and slapped me, then sent me to Mother Superior Francis Paul.

But she enfolded me in her voluminous black robes and patted my back. I could always get a hug out of her. To me she was very approachable so I was never afraid of her.

She addressed me as her "little peanut" or "whirlwind." Maybe she called all of us that since she slaughtered our names.

My Mom LOVED her.
